Why organosilicon compounds? While there are many electrolyte materials in use today, there are increasing concerns about the flammability and toxicity of the compounds used most frequently, such as acetonitrile and various alkyl carbonates. The incorporation of silicon atoms into the backbone of ethylene glycol oligomers conveys a dramatic improvement in many properties of interest, especially safety. Organsilicon compounds have lower vapor pressure, higher flash point, and withstand higher operating voltages than simple alkyl carbonates. All these properties point to the increased safety associated with organosilicon compounds. Silatronix organosilicon compounds can be advantageously used as replacement for conventional electrolytes such as acetonitrile and alkyl carbonates. Organosilicon compounds have lower conductivity than these competing electrolytes, but have the important advantages of lower flammability, lower vapor pressure, and higher electrochemical breakdown voltage. These features combined make Silatronix organosilicon electrolytes a disruptive technology in the energy storage field. Electrochemical double-layer capacitors (Supercapacitors) Organosilicon compounds and mixtures of compounds can easily provide conducitivities exceeding 2 mS/cm at room temperature, with voltage stability of nearly 4 V in symmetric electrode devices. The high voltage stability of Silatronix OS compounds provides high energy density. Lithium ion batteries Silatronix OS compounds are very stable at the ~3.1 V voltage of lithium-ion batteries.
